Since downloading Firefox 13, every time I visit salon.com, my computer overheats and then the screen freezes.

Salon.com is the only website that does this. It was not a problem prior to downloading Firefox 13. It starts with a distinct slowdown (delayed response to mouse clicks, etc.), then I lose control of the screen; it just freezes. The base of my computer gets very hot as this happens.

Try to clear cookies and cache(from Firefox button > History menu > Clear Recent History > Time Range to clear select Everything > Details select Cookies and Cache > Clear Now) and check it again.

This does not work. I have my browser set to keep NO history, so my computer never carries cookies between sessions. I also periodically clear current history (cookies and cache) during longer sessions using the "Options" tab.

To test your fix, I cleared all current history immediately before going to Salon. Within about 30 seconds, my computer was making a thrashing noise and overheating. A few seconds after that, I could barely get the cursor to move.

hello, thanks for reporting back - does the same behaviour occur when you launch firefox in safemode & navigate to salon.com?

Hello, experiencing the same problem and have tried all your solutions with no appreciable affect. Running in safe mode right now and everything is fine, but loading Salon spikes my CPU usage to 0ver 100% and takes up half a gig of physical memory. Viewing Salon in Safari and FF before the June 5th update to v.13 is fine. If I could roll back Firefox this problem would probably go away.

I am having the same problem. The only thing that has changed on my computer is upgrading to Firefox 13. Since then, approximately 3 times each day my computer completely freezes and I have to perform a hard reboot. This only happens when I am running Firefox 13.

I installed Firefox 13 a day or two ago and it freezes on most websites and becomes unusable. I have started using Chrome because Firefox is almost unusable. I've tried clearing history and cache etc etc but it makes no difference.

Works OK after disabling XMarks addin. Very sad as this is my most essential addin.

It seems somehow I had developed 30,000 duplicate bookmarks in XMarks. By loading Firefox in Safe mode, going online to Xmarks to remove the duplicates, then uninstalling XMarks, deleting all bookmarks in Firefox, then re-installing XMarks and resyncing I now have my usable bookmarks and Firefox has become stable again.

After updating to Firefox 13 and Xmarks 4.1 on my Mac, Firefox freezes. If I disable the Xmarks add-in, Firefox runs fine.

I installed the previous version of Xmarks, 4.0.6 and it is running fine again. Previous versions are here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/xmarks-sync/versions/

Have you tried running NoScript from the extensions available via the tools tab (click add-ons)? Worked for me, though I don't really know why. Might as well throw Adblock and Flashblock in there while you are at it. Webpages have simply become too clogged with sh*t for older machines to deal with.

I'm now on Firefox 16.0.2 and I'm having this problem with Salon.com. I'm using Vista 64 bit. It not only freezes the browser but it seems to freeze the entire event queue as well. The mouse cursor disappears and you cannot Alt-Tab to any other application.

This happens most frequently with http://salon.com and it is just as likely to happen in Firefox "safe mode" as without it.

I should note I recently had to reinstall because of some babylon crapware getting installed on my machine.
