My bookmarks file is over 2MB because Mozilla seems to continually adds a 'Get Bookmark Add-ons' bookmark.
The location of these 'bookmarks' is here: http://en-us.add-ons.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/bookmarks/ and although I've never visited that site, they continually get added, sometimes 5 to 10 times a day. I'm running Firefox 16.0.1 with Mac OS 10.7.5

The link you are showing is a list of available add-ons, that is additional, optional software relating to bookmark use.
If you wish to see your own bookmarks use the sidebar or the bookmarks manager/library. Note Firefox by default also stores History, that is a list of sites visited.
I would not worry about the size of your bookmarks file, it is unlikely to be big enough to cause any problems.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox Profile Folder and try to delete all places files to force Firefox to create a new places.sqlite database file.
John99 thanks for the reply, and I've attached a screenshot of my bookmark Library. you see all the 'Get Bookmark Add-ons. The trouble is that they continue for 7500 more lines (this CANNOT be normal operating procedure) before some of my 'regular' bookmarks show up again. So it's quite difficult to scan through all my bookmarks with this monster-mess of 'un-added' bookmarks inserted in the middle of my (relatively small) bookmark list. Why is this happening? Anybody know?
You will have to delete the places.sqlite file to recover from this corruption like I posted above.

You can try to check and repair the places database with this extension, but this may not work.
It may also be worth trying to delete the incorrect bookmarks.
You will be able to search for the bookmarks, there are various methods to mark blocks of bookmarks. If you search and then for instance use Ctrl+A that will then allow deletion of all the selected bookmarks.
Of course if the places.sqlite is corrupt that may not work. It is probably still worth backing up your bookmark now and as you attempt to correct the situation. Otherwise you may end up repeatedly removing the places.squlite and destroying all your bookmarks.
