In Firefox options I have set "Keep Cookies - Until they expire" options and when I exit and reload Firefox there are still many expired cookies in the cookies list?

I have noticed that session cookies are being removed ok, its just cookies that are set to expire on a specific date that are expired aren't being removed by Firefox. These cookies never seem to get removed automatically, only if I delete them manually.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Did you check the cookie exceptions?

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: Exceptions

If clearing cookies doesn't work then it is possible that the cookies.sqlite file that stores the cookies is corrupted.

Rename (or delete) cookies.sqlite (cookies.sqlite.old) and delete other present cookie files like cookies.sqlite-journal in the Firefox profile folder in case the file cookies.sqlite got corrupted.

If you reopen tabs automatically then cookies may be stored in the sessionstore.js file as part of session data.

I think I'll go ahead and delete cookies.sqlite and see if that fixes it. Doing so will wipe out all cookies while leaving cookie exceptions intact. Also try an app named Cookie Monster to delete them! Hope it works
