Why is Firefox continuously attempting to "connect" an HTML file on the C drive and locking the browser?

I am trying to open an HTM file from my C: drive. This used to work fine, but today Firefox just keeps displaying a "connecting" message with a spinning green circle. The page loads, but none of the links work and the browser window freezes (even if I try to close it, it will take almost 30 seconds to respond). What could possibly be causing this? There is no special scripting on the page. I don't have any add-ons or extensions installed.

I am running Firefox 24 (I think - I can't check because the browser is, once again, totally frozen on this page).

Reload the webpage while bypassing the cache using one of the following steps:

  • Hold down the Shift key and click the Reload button with a left click.

OR

  • Press Ctrl + F5 or Ctrl + Shift + R (Windows and Linux)
  • Press Command + Shift + R (Mac)

Are there any direct links in this HTML file that link to files on internet ?

Wacka - no, that didn't help. The refreshing/loading/connecting continued.

cor-el - no, there are no Internet links, just links to other local files.

The problem seems to be resolved by discontinuing use of a customized *.js file that controls tri-pane navgation/display (this file is part of a HTML help system). Although it's worked for over a year, and I haven't made any changes to it, reverting to the uncustomized version eliminates the flickering.

But it would still be nice to know why it stopped working.
