Can't get right settings to open ALL .pdf files

I have problem in that many pdf file downloads only end up in opening a new blank tab. I've dabbled in the preference settings as some articles suggested, but no joy. What makes it more aggravating is that some pdf files open without a hitch, but about 70% don't. I'm using Mac OSX 10.7.5.

This question was posted under the Firefox OS product which is Mozilla's own mobile operating system. I have no moved this to the Firefox for Desktop product.
