Firefox 32.0 breaks Ditto

I use Ditto (clipboard manager). Sometimes when I am searching I would type some words in the address bar then add a commonly used word or phrase with Ditto.

THE PROBLEM Ever since I upgraded to Firefox 32.0 today, when ever I am pasting from Ditto it is replacing what I typed in the address bar instead of being appended to it.

This never happened in FF 31.0 or recent versions.

I have reverted to FF 31.0 for now.

Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a fix?

Regards, Joe

Chosen solution

Well, I guess no one around here uses Ditto and can verify the problem that you are having. Considering that Firefox is one of only 4 major browsers and Sourceforge hosts 10's of thousands of programs, I figure it will be easier finding a Ditto user who uses Firefox than to find a Firefox contributor who happens to use Ditto. I for one use a different clipboard program called Clip Trakker, and haven't had the problem you describe with Firefox 32 and Clip Trakker.

Sorry, I don't install new programs that I have no use for, to try to help users - gave that up 8 or 9 years ago after having too many problems after installing programs to try to help another user.

The only other thing I can suggest is to file a Bug report and hopefully one of the Bug tracking persons might have an answer for you. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/

@the-edmeister,

I know where I can find support for Ditto. What I am pointing out is this never happened in Firefox 31.0. It only happens when I upgrade to 32.0. I have now reverted to 31.0 and it no longer happens. Clearly, something in the 32.0 update broke things.

So, it been 1 week and the only reply I've had refers me to Ditto support rather than acknowledge there is a problem with Firefox 32.0.

Am I to assume this is the best support that Mozilla can muster? If it is, I find it quite poor. Please excuse me for being candid but it just had to be said.

If you had explained things like this in your first post rather than being so abrupt, I would have been in a better position to understand your reasoning.

I am using the portable version of Ditto which is stealth but I still won't put you through testing this problem for me.

I have posted on Ditto's forums but I am not very hopeful about finding solution. All that might achieve is to find another victim to commiserate with.

Nevertheless, I thank you for at least replying.

What a mess! None of this was necessary in Firefox 31 - everything just worked. The problem only began when I upgraded to 32.

I didn't find a fix for the problem, however, I found out what may be causing the issue. This is how it was explained to me:

"Firefox selects all text on focus. So when Ditto puts focus back to Firefox address bar they select all text, then ditto pastes the text replacing all text."

So for the benefit of anyone who may have this problem here's what you can do as a workaround.

1. In the Firefox address bar type about:config and hit Enter 2. Acknowledge the warning by clicking on the box that says "I'll be careful, I promise!" 3. In the search bar type browser.urlbar.clickSelectsAll 4. Double-click the search result (which is browser.urlbar.clickSelectsAll) and that will change the value from true to false.

This will solve the original problem that is the topic of this thread. However, another problem will arise - you can no longer single-click to select everything in the address bar. As a workaround, follow the above instructions again but this time search for browser.urlbar.doubleClickSelectsAll and set it to true. By doing so you will now be able to select everything in the address bar by double-clicking on it.

I hope this helps someone.

On Linux those values are the default for those prefs, so this would only be needed if you changed them before.

  • browser.urlbar.clickSelectsAll = false
  • browser.urlbar.doubleClickSelectsAll = true

I prefer these settings as you can easily click the location/address bar if you want to copy or modify part of the link. A double-click or the Ctrl+A keyboard shortcut will easily allow to start a new URL.

@cor-el,

I am not on Linux, I'm on Windows 8.1 and I swear I never changed those values before.

Thank you for the suggestions. I will see if I can get used to this new way of doing things.
