I don't know for sure and I don't have Thunderbird here with me to check right now. In your position, I'd experiment. I'd suspect it's a shortcut key so you can start ("begin"?) a new task definition with a single keyboard action.

Since the B doesn't appear in the window for new Events, which has virtually the same layout as the one for Tasks, it's probably just a cosmetic bug. It has no effect as a shortcut key.

It indeed was just an alt-B shortcut to place the cursor in the Start: date box inside the New Task screen. Thank you!
