I am using Thunderbird 38.1 on Windows 7 Professional OS. It is constantly freezing and the giving the spinning cursor sometimes with "Not Responding" message in the header and sometimes whites out. This can last anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or more and most often happens when I open a new mailbox or reply window. I used the solution proposed to turn off the automatic windows indexing but that didn't help and may have made the issue a little worse.

no more problems, eh??

The most common cause is AV, as implied by christ1. Start *Windows'* safe mode with networking enabled - win7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7 Still In Windows safe mode, start thunderbird in safe mode - http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/safe-mode

Please tell us, does problem go away?
