I tried several times to download this patch and it wouldn't work. I later saw a comment on this that it was not really Firefox sending this patch but a hacker. Is this correct? This, plus my daily crashes on Firefox. PLEASE HELP, Thanks.

Chosen solution

I read somewhere that my Norton virus protection is not compatible with Mozilla Firefox, so hence the daily crashes. Thanks.

¡Hola!

42.0 is the latest release of Firefox from Mozilla, see https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/42.0/releasenotes/

If you've been tricked by a bogus update, you can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one. Windows 8 has antivirus built-in already.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

If this was a .exe file then it was fake as lately these Firefox update.exe's been popping up on some sites as a way to infect less experienced Windows users.

Firefox updates are not done by way of a ,exe since it is not just for Windows but also Mac OSX and Linux. Updates are done in Firefox itself or by download from https://www.mozilla.org
