Why do I get this message? An error occurred while sending mail: The mail server sent an incorrect greeting: cm12gb1 smtp.talktalk.net ESMTP server not availab
I can receive emails but not send them. I get this error message: "An error occurred while sending mail: The mail server sent an incorrect greeting: cm12gb1 smtp.talktalk.net ESMTP server not available." My email provider has not been able to help me. I had a similar problem, albeit with a different error message requesting a server password, two weeks ago but was able to solve it by changing the Server settings in Thunderbird. However, this time there don't appear to be any changes that I can make that will resolve it.

Thank you. I did contact TalkTalk again and this time got through to a very helpful support person. First of all he directed me here: https://help2.talktalk.co.uk/configuring-mozilla-thunderbird-talktalk-email . However, that was not the end of the matter as there were some specific settings for @lineone.net mail accounts. After about 30 mins on the phone we got the problem solved between us. Or I hope that its solved. I still don't know how or why the settings were changed a few weeks ago from those that had worked perfectly well for the previous 10 months. Anyway, now happily sending emails from my desktop again and, incidentally, have solved a problem with sending emails from my phone at the same time by adjusting those settings too.

smtp.talktalk.net ESMTP server not available
Apparently the error is from your provider's server. Talk to your email provider.
I have already tried that but haven't been able to get any help from them.
Ask for someone there that knows more than to answer the phone when it makes a noise.
