ransomware virus encrypted my db files for thinderbird there is a very large file global-messages-db.sqlite and it is timely to the virus attack but was not hit. does this contain my emails? if so, how can i extract them back to the thunderbird database which seems to be entitled cert8.db?

global-messages-db.sqlite is an index file for Global Search. It does not contain your mail. cert8.db contains the certificate database. Files without a file extension, e.g. like Inbox, are mail files.
