I deleted an add-on last night and decided to reinstall it. the second time around, Firefox wouldn't let me, calling it corrupt. (I hadn't had that problem with DL'ing the add-on originally.) I have El Capitan installed on my MacBook Air and a back-up drive, so I could easily restore the app, as long as I could find it. so how would I find it? than you much.

What add-on are you talking about?

It shouldn't be a problem to install extensions hosted on the Add-ons website.

Do you click the "Add to Firefox" button?

Do you have security software that might be blocking the file?

If the file is corrupt then there might be a problem with the signing and such issues can be caused by security software that unpacks and repacks the files in the XPI file.

if I hadn't, I couldn't have gotten the warning that I described.

not as far as I know and certainly not on Firefox.

so I used Time Machine to restore the add-on to my current profile but it did not appear in my list of add-ons. so what to do? I guess I should give up at this point, right?
