After searching with Google lately, instead of going to the page I clicked on, it takes me to a YaHoo page. What's wrong?

This has happened a lot recently. It does not seem to happen all the time, but enough that it is irritating. I prefer to use Firefox, but this has made me change to Google Chrome. If I can find a solution to this problem, I would still prefer Firefox.

You are infected with the Spigot extension Searchme and perhaps other unwanted add-ons. These can creep in when you install a free software bundle; sometimes they do not let you opt out of the extras because that's how they make money.

You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Command+Shift+a (Windows: Ctrl+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side. All extensions are optional. If in doubt, disable.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
