Address bar is extremely slow in Firefox 48

The new address bar is extremely slow in when presenting completion suggestions. In versions of Firefox prior to version 47, typing a letter in the address bar would instantaneously (or very nearly so) bring up a list of completion suggestions. In version 47 this slowed down dramatically. With version 47 it would take many seconds to bring up to the completion list after typing a letter in the address bar. It was never faster than three seconds and there was often a delay of ten seconds or more.

In Version 47, setting browser.urlbar.unifiedcomplete to false resolved the problem with the slowdown. However, in version 48 the address bar is always slow regardless of the setting of browser.urlbar.unifiedcomplete.

The current operation of the address bar is pretty much unusable. Type a letter, wait 3-10 seconds for the list to come up. Type a second letter to further refine the selection, wait another 3-10 seconds. And so on.

I have reverted back to version 47 for now.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh).

Is the problem still there?

Hello, you can also try a new firefox profile.

thank you

I started Firefox 48 in Safe Mode as suggested, however it didn't solve the problem. It did appear to have a small effect though. Instead of the delay ranging from 3-10 seconds, the bottom end of the range dropped to about 2 seconds. Still very slow.

Based on what I'm seeing, it looks like the algorithm used to calculate the completion suggestions is orders of magnitude slower than it used to be.

Start your Computer in safe mode with networking. Then start Firefox. Try Safe websites. Is the problem still there?

Won't I lose all my bookmarks, history, etc. if I create a new profile?

Creating a new profile doesn't do anything to the old. It will wait there until you open it or remove it.
