I'm using Mac OS Sierra 10.12.6 and currently on Firefox 55.0.3. I've downloaded and installed v56.0 twice and it hangs up. Constant beach ball. When I finally do a 'force quit' it says "Firefox is not responding". I've never had trouble with Firefox and have used it for many many years. It keeps asking me to update but 56 just won't run on my Mac.

Chosen solution

You can look at uBlock Origin as a replacement for Adblock Plus to see if that works better.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Some problems occur when your Internet security program was set to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow Firefox to connect to the Internet again;

  • Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version).
  • Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs. For detailed instructions, see

AdBlocker and the Multi row Toolbar add-ons were the problem. Thanks. I'm now up and running on v56.01!!
