I have set my home page, but when first starting FF quantum I only get a new blank tab

I have set my home page, but when first starting FF quantum I only get a new blank tab

Chosen solution

Browsing [sic] through about:config I tried killing a few dragons but that had limited effect. Changing browser.startup.firstrunSkipsHomepage;true to false worked once only. Browsing similar problems on the WWW, again, I decided to REFRESH FF. That worked immediately. It has stopped the subsequent annoying blinking of the tabs after loading and FF is generally much quicker. I have not changed any of my NVIDIA graphics settings as it is stable and I get easily 100+ FPS in SLI at 2K playing games. Thanks to everyone for their effortts and time.

HI, separate : you have a lot of errors in your Video Card Drivers for your adapterDescription: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 driverDate: 2-23-2018

Did you update your drivers on this date or did you have a Windows update if can remember. ??? As will install Nvidia drivers but not the best ones.

u'unavailable = bad u'Disabled by pref' = you Essentially all the best things a video card does is disabled or not available.

GeForce Game Ready Driver - WHQL Version: 398.11 - Release Date: Tue Jun 05, 2018 https://www.geforce.com/drivers

There is a large amount of your drivers in the Windows Repository please Search for Device Manager and check that Windows10 has not replaced the drivers with Microsoft's https://www.howtogeek.com/302595/how-to-stop-windows-10-from-automatically-updating-hardware-drivers/

What is the URL your trying to go to ?? You have turned off everything in the gear icon on a new tab page ?? Recheck URL you entered for spelling or anything missing from it. Does the page you want to go to can you get to it from that page using a bookmark or typing it ?

Tx - I have updated to the nvidia driver to 398.11. How to I get the "best features" enabled? I have 2 monitors in SLI. I have drive booster 5; it updated the realtek driver. It says the intel MEI needs updating, but this never seems to work. Yes I had problems with W10 creator update [who didn't?]. I still have the blank tab instead of home page problem. TIA

Did you check your hardware manufacture site for driver update? Also iNtel MEI updates can be found on iNtel site as well. And as for W10 CU problems I haven't had issues. It comes down to one doing their homework when doing such updates. Also for Nivida should only use Nivida drivers from their site not from MS sites that is asking for problem.

Hi djp2018, I don't see anything unusual about your home page that should lead to a blank page.

If you click the Home button or use the keyboard shortcut Alt+Home, do those work normally?

If so, could you double-check your startup setting, that the "bubble" for home page is selected? That's on the Options page:

  • Windows: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
  • Mac: "3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences
  • Linux: "3-bar" menu button (or Edit menu) > Preferences
  • Any system: type or paste about:preferences into the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it

In the top section -- Startup -- confirm that you have "Show your home page" selected.

The Firefox icon can be set up to launch one or more specific pages at startup (or more specifically, when you use the icon). To check whether that is set:

First, open the shortcut as follows:

  • Desktop shortcut: right-click the icon, choose Properties
  • Pinned taskbar icon: right-click the icon, right-click Mozilla Firefox, choose Properties

Windows normally will select the Shortcut tab. If not, go ahead and click the Shortcut tab.

You'll see the Target highlighted. On Windows, that usually is no more and no less than the following (depending on 32-bit/64-bit):

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"

If anything follows after that (for example, "about:blank"), try clearing it out.

After OK'ing the Properties dialog, you can test right away to confirm that Firefox now launches only your home page. Either:

  • double-click desktop shortcut
  • right-click pinned taskbar icon, click Mozilla Firefox

Success?

Ok. The MEI has updated ok. Sorry, but I don't understand "check your hardware manufacture site for driver update", what hardware? All of it! And I don't understand how a hardware driver problem will affect FF for homepage opening.

Tx for your help so far. No, sorry didn't work. If I click the FF icon and open a second new window of FF that does open on the homepage. Anymore suggestions. TIA

In the startup window, does Firefox show the page's address in the address bar, as though Firefox tried and failed to load it, or does it have the generic placeholder text Search with Google or enter address instead? Or something else?

Hi, Disregard WestEnd response.

My advice to all that use Driver updaters is to update once then uninstall it before it causes problems, which it will.

You will need to go to a NVIDIA GeForce forum on advise on how to turn on or set up your card properly for better results.

Hi, you mentioned the Creators update. Your a Windows version behind. Spring Update version 1803. You can check in System --> About for version # Use the top button : https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Ok Tx. My W10 is uptodate - Version 1803 OS build 17134.112 FF comes up with a "New tab", the address box is empty with the search address stuff.

Surely this is a FF problem and nothing to do with W10 and NVidia drivers?

Hi, it seems so but attack from all angles never hurts. Also not going ballistic till now : uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files , C:\Program Files(x86) & C:\ProgramData Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. (Note: This should be Pinned and run Weekly, If never done below expect 10's of gig's) Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do :

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 60.0.2 with a Full Version Installer

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Tx. A bit of a sledgehammer but I'll give it a go and report back.

-( No, it hasn't worked. DiskCleanup did remove 2.9GB from my OS drive.

next? It must be a profile thing or similar?

Nope, that didn't help.

Go to about:config and check if the browser.newtabpage.enabled is true.

Tx, yes it is set true.

The line above looks very odd: browser.newtabpage.blocked; modified: string: "urJj0dUe3oGRiLSXAY0Oww==":1}

should I delete this string value?

TIA
