Not a question, a suggestion:

So, Thunderbird gets updated to 68.5.0 and - without any warning - all bar one of the extensions I have used for months or years no longer work, being "incompatible with Thunderbird 68.5.0". Thanks a bunch, that's irritating almost beyond words.

Can't even go back to a previous version because of the changes that have been made to how profiles work, and I don't want to muck around with duplicate profiles, accounts and so forth.

This is more typical of Microsoft than Mozilla!

How about warning users before they update their T-bird exactly which if their extensions will be disabled if they apply the update? Make updating a matter of *informed* choice, please!

One very grumpy user here.

It usually is a good idea to read the release notes. https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/68.5.0/releasenotes/

Due to changes of the underlying Mozilla platform add-ons are only supported if add-on authors have adapted them. For any add-ons not being compatible any more, please check with the add-on author, or look for an alternative one on AMO. https://addons.thunderbird.net/thunderbird/

Thunderbird isn't a Mozilla product, it's a community project. Developers are largely volunteers and not payed staff.

Which extensions are declared incompatible with 68? Here is a list of 222 68-compatible add-ons, and there are several others not on the official site.
