Aaaaand found the solution...

search about:config in the URL bar. Then search media.hardwaremediakeys.enabled. Toggle this to false.

You then need to restart Firefox.

Hope this helps someone else who wants to use keyboard play/pause solely for iTunes, Spotify, or other apps other than Firefox.
