Thunderbird fails to send messages that contain a URL but not messages without a URL
I have been using Thunderbird on Linux for as long as it has been available but it is becoming increasingly unreliable with my ISP which is Centurylink.net. Centurystink is awful, god awful, and their tech support is abysmal but I have too many accounts set up that use the address to change and I don't like Google's spying on everything. I am finding that the messages which get rejected have one thing in common: they al contains URL to a website that I am trying to send to a friend. Straight text/html messages without a URL seem to work fine but whenever I include a URL, the message fails to get through and Thunderbird posts this message:
Sending of the message failed.
The message could not be sent using Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.centurylink.net for an unknown reason. Please verify that your Outgoing server (SMTP) settings are correct and try again

This is the spec sheet for the binoculars Glenn gave me.
I checked on the forums and the Centurylink site for instructions on which settings to use and tried all the available options with no improvement. I know that Centurylink doesn't have proper SPF records and many ISPs block incoming mail from them due to excessive SPAM but their tech support always says there are no problems on their end. I know their SMTP server is hosting multiple domains and that can cause issues. The mtr report below shows 100% packet loss on the next to last hop but that is not always the problem. My hostname is not a real DNS entry and is only valid on my home network. Similarly, the dsl.winriverody.net is my local network name for my DSL router. I am using a gigabit wired connection to my router with ADSL service to the outside world network, not wireless.
If I write two messages, one with an URL and one without the URL and then hit send one after the other, the one without the URL goes through without any problem and the one with a URL fails.
I can sometimes get the message to go through by removing the https:// at the front of the URL and/or padding the beginning of the line with spaces. I've tried restarting Thunderbird in troubleshooting mode, disabling as many language packs as possible (why do I need thirty language packs to begin with?) but many cannot be uninstalled for some reason. I have tried checking for new messages before sending (POP before send) but that doesn't seem to help since there are two different servers for incoming and outgoing email. I have the same problem regardless of which computer I use to send the email.
I am a retired systems programmer. Please let me know if there is anything I can do/test/report to get to the bottom of this issue.

My guess is they have implemented some sort of spam filter that really is more trouble than it will ever be worth. They certainly get into this forum far more regularly that their size as a provider would indicate they should.
