I just installed Linux Mint (latest version - Cinnamon) on my pc and since I did that I am having trouble sending emails in Mozilla Thunderbird "Login to server with username failed". I have tried checking my password and re-entering it - no luck. I called my ISP and we went through email SMTP settings - no luck. I tried changing my outgoing SMTP server. No luck. The ISP said to check with Thunderbird support. I can send it using the ISP's webmail but not the email client on my machine now. I am receiving emails fine.

Any ideas? Thanks, John

Is this also is a clean install of Thunderbird for Linux downloaded from: https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/

What version of Thunderbird are you using ?

Are you using a new profile or one previously used by previous OS ?

What OS did you have before the Linux Mint (latest version - Cinnamon) ?

Who is your ISP? What server settingsare you currently using for the smtp outgoing server?

  • Menu icon > Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • Under 'Mail and News Accounts'
  • Copy all the text and paste it into this question.

re :error message "Login to server with username failed". Check the User name in smtp outgoing server - it should be full email address.

IINET is my ISP and I tried using IMAP then POP3 allowed me to receive emails but I still cant send.

Sorry before Mint I had Ubuntu 22.04 Jimmy Jammy or something, which I had previously upgraded from Ubuntu 20.04. However, this "upgrade" turned out to be a downgrade since I could no longer detect my scanner and I could no longer preview my image files with thumbnails.

Also my Thunderbird is 91.11.0 - I will try to upgrade it and see if that helps.

Your current server settings are 'interesting' as they differ from info on iinet website. see : https://help.iinet.net.au/email-settings

I'm also finding many other third party email clients say the secure server option is available and not just on a mac. IMAP Incoming e-mail: mail.iinet.net.au Incoming port: 993 Connection Security: SSL/TLS Authentication Methods: Normal Password

SMTP Outgoing e-mail: mail.iinet.net.au Outgoing port: 465 Connection Security: SSL/TLS Authentication Methods: Normal Password

Username for both incoming and smtp will be full email address.

Just a thought, but are you using a VPN when sending ? If yes, switch it off and test sending again.
