update runs then times out

When I went online today (8/21/2024) firefox said it needed an update and started running it. Seemed to take a long time, and then timed out. killed the browser and restarted. Same thing.

Is this a bad update? Having to use another product to ask this question.

What prompted you to update Firefox?

Sadly, there are a lot of bad people out there who make viruses that try to trick you into downloading updates for software. If you were asked to download an update to Firefox and it was a full screen message, something opened in a new tab, or a message displayed on another website, it was probably not legitimate.

You should redownload Firefox from mozilla.org (or choose the download for your operating system and language from this page).

I would also recommend scanning your computer from malware to ensure that it remains safe and secure.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Hope this helps.
