Transferring Thunderbird to new PC

more options

Hi, I'm coming to you with a bit complicated problem. Please be patient with my long explaining.

My wife's parents have each their laptops. I had installed Thunderbird to them years a go. They never had a problem receiving their mails until last week. Now they can't receive emails but can send. On the other hand they can receive mails on their cellphones but not send (Android phones, not Thunderbird app). I have checked Thunderbirds setting on their laptops, everything was okay.

I have 4 laptops my own. I am going to give them numbers that you can follow me better. 1) asus (my daily personal pc) win 10 home. 2) Linux (my bussines pc) Mint 3 &4 ) Fresh windows 10 pro installed unused pc. Only Firefox and Thunderbird are installed as extra.

I load parents' mail account manually to Thunderbird on my pc 2, 3 and 4. Result is the same, I can send mails but cant receive. I have created another mail account for them (same provider), result was also same (for pc 2,3,4). I have an email account on same provider, I load my account, resul is the same (for pc 2,3,4). I tried my other email accounts from another provider, all of them works perfect (for pc 2,3,4). So, I thought that the problem was on provider side. I called them and explained the problem. They said that all is ok on their side and I should contact to Thunderbird support. The name of provider is "YouSee" from Denmark.

But....... As a last thing I add their email account manually to my laptop 1 Asus. Then I started to receive hundreds of emails from their account, so their account worked on pc1. Then I thougth, if I transfer my Thunderbird from my pc 1 to 3 or 4 then problem will be solved. But didn't. After I moved my Thunderbird from pc1 to pc3 and to pc 4 parents account and my account on same provider (YouSee) could not receive mails but could send. All my other accounts from different providers worked perfectly on pc 3 and 4 after moving.

In some way, something is disturbing communication between Thunderbird and provider YouSee on all 5 laptops. All Thunderbirds on 6 laptops have same last version. I checked firewalls, Thunderbird has been marked on all of them. I blocked windows defender and firewalls, didn't help. I also tried all possible imap, pop3, cofigurations of the provider. I installed older versions of Thunderbird and tried, didn't work either. It can't be windows updates because all Windows pc er up to date. Windows version can't be the problem because my pc1 and parents' laptops have same Win 10 Home. It can't be Thunderbird updates because pc1 has some update as the others.

Can anybody help me to understand the reason of the problem? An email account can't work properly on 5 laptops but work normaly on the 6th pc while all provider and Thunderbird configurations are completely the same? What should I try more?

Thank you all in advance. Peyman A.

IS there a VPN enabled? Most servers do not like VPN - Maybe pc1 is the only PC where it's not enabled ?

On Parents PC or any PC which is not working: Tools > Developer Tools > error console clear the Error console using the bin icon and thn close it. Restart Thunderbird Usually it tries to connect to server, but otherwise click on 'Get Messages': do you get an error message ? If yes: It might be helpful to post/upload an image that shows the entire error message. Then open the 'Error Console' Post an image showing it's contents.

Please provide info:

ON PC1 - which is working ok In Thunderbird Help > TRoubleshooting Information Scroll down to 'Mail and News Accounts' section Copy data and post info into this forum question.

On Parent PC - or any PC which is not working Do same as above so we can compare all settings with a working account and non working account.

Trying to think of possible issues:

worth checking...See if there is a difference with Proxy settings between working PC1 and other PC's.

  • Settings > General
  • Scroll to 'Network & Disk Space' section
  • Under 'Connection'
  • click on 'Settings'

eg: 'Use system proxy settings'

Also try : manually resetting the stored password - I do not mean get a new one. Maybe the stored password file has a glitch for that account.

Do this on PC which does not work.

  • In Settings > Privacy & Security
  • Scroll to Passwords section
  • click on 'Saved Passwords'
  • Click on 'Show Passwords'
  • Locate the IMAP://.. line (assuming you have set up as imap) OR mailbox:// line if set up as POP
  • Right click on line and select 'Edit Password'
  • completely remove everything and then retype the correct password - it's the same as the smtp.
  • Then click on 'Close'

Exit Thunderbird and allow time fo background processes to complete before starting again. It should have forced an update to saved password file.

To test if Windows Anti-Virus is a problem, the best method is to exit all programs and then restart the Computer using 'Safe mode with Networking', but you will need to use an ethernet cable to connect computer to router/hub. It will not work over wireless connection.

Also...Firewall - Software blocking incoming email is a common cause of not being able to receive messages after updating Thunderbird, since it may be set to trust the previous version of Thunderbird but no longer recognize the updated version as trusted.

Exit Thunderbird Access Firewall (this may be the default supplied with Windows OS or maybe it's controlled by an Anti-Virus product you installed) Remove Thunderbird from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs, then add it back manually to ensure it's recognising the most up to date version of Thunderbird.

Thank you for your messages. (Toad-Hall)

  • Only PC1 has a VPN and it is not auto enabled.
  • I get error messages sometimes, like picture TBird. It says "connection timeout" or "connection to server refused". Sometimes (days) I never get those messages.
For pc3 please see the attached error picture 1. PC34
  • Please see the pictures below for accounts of PC34 and PC1. There is no problem there.
  • Proxy settings are identically the same on all windows laptops as 'Use system proxy settings'
  • I deleted and retyped passwords.
  • I did everything you said about firewall in 'Safe mode with Networking'.

After all that, I still can not receive mails from provider youSee/mail on 4 laptops. I also install Thunderbird one of my Android phone, the same problem. Pls see the picture Cell

I am running of ideas..... Tomorrow I will check parents cell phones' mail settings, I may catch something there.

Hi again. I have a Sony Xperia 10 cell phone which is running Sailfish operaying system from Jolla/Finland. I have created parents account in phone's own mail program and it worked perfectly.

I also have installed Thunderbird to the phone via ApkPure. Thunderbird working perfectly, receiving and sending emails as normal.

So, parents and my email account from YouSee provider works normal on Sailfish operating system on cellphone with Thunderbird.

It may give an idea perhaps....

The error - socket state is closed.

I discovered another user had this error with another server and the reason was : No email recovery phone number in place at the mailserver and it was rejecting attempts to log in.
