Hi,

Starting about a week ago, I can no longer see Buy, Add To Wishlist, and other critical buttons when browsing amazon.com. The amazon.com logo on the top left does not appear either.

I tried all the following:

  • Disabled AdBlock Plus: no change.
  • Disabled NoScript: no change.
  • Disabled both ABP and NS at the same time: no change.
  • Ran Firefox in safe mode: no change.
  • Opened amazon.com in Internet Explorer: it works fine with IE.

I haven't noticed any other sites (yet?) with this problem. I already contacted amazon's help department, and they basically told me it works for them and to contact you for assistance.

Thanks for your help!

Try clearing the cache and the cookies for the site.

To clear the cache and cookies:

  1. At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Tools menu, and select Options....
  2. Select the Advanced panel.
  3. Click on the Network tab
  4. Click Clear Now
  5. Select the Privacy panel.
  6. Depending on your setup, either click the Show Cookies button, or Remove individual cookies link
  7. Select the amazon.com cookie in the list
  8. Click Remove Cookie
  9. Finally Close the Cookies dialog and Options window.

Thanks for the tip, but it did not work. I have FF set to automatically delete the cache and cookies when it closes. But I tried your suggestions anyway.

Okay I figured it out! Turns out after clearing Site Preferences on that same screen (Tools > Options... > Privacy > Settings) amazon now works fine. Thanks for the help.

To rule out a profile problem, try creating a new profile (user data and settings are stored in a profile). For details of how to create a new profile, see Creating a new Firefox profile on Windows

If it works with the new profile you can copy data such as bookmarks and passwords to the new profile. It is better to re-install your add-ons to the new profile. I would not copy the preferences file as that may have settings that contributed to your issue. See Transferring data to a new profile

I had this problem for ages, and on other sites too, especially the new BBC iplayer. The reason has now been discovered (by Simon, thanks). It was because I had earlier used Accessibility features to get rid of all the black backgrounds that make text so difficult to read.

To get everything back including the buttons (and unfortunately the backgrounds as well), I needed to do Settings, Control Panel, Accessibility Options, Display. Then remove the tick on Use High Contrast. So rather surprisingly, I needed Low Contrast, presumably.

Apparently some web designers design buttons etc using 'Background'.

Now I can buy things again.

Would be interested to know if this helps anyone.

You can set font sizes (text/page zoom) and text colors on web pages with the NoSquint extension.

I had the same problem, and this solution works but the steps are slightly different on newer versions of Firefox.

  1. Tools > Clear Recent History
  2. Set Time Range to "Everything"
  3. Check "Site Preferences", and optionally uncheck things you don't want to clear.
  4. Click "Clear Now"
