I am using Firefox 4.0 on Windows XP. I wanted to install a spell-checker add-on on Firefox to enable automatic spell-check like I have in my Google Chrome. I searched on net and landed on this ( http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Using%20the%20spell%20checker ) article. It says that "Firefox automatically checks the spelling" but No such automatic spell check was happening. I also verified that Tools->Options->Advanced->General->"Check my spelling as I type" was CHECKED. I followed the adding dictionaries instructions and installed a dictionary; and only then the automatic spell check started happening. Shouldn't this article tell that Firefox doesn't come with any pre-installed dictionary, so you have to manually install one.? And as Firefox has an inbuilt spell-check feature then shouldn't it also have at least one inbuilt dictionary?

Chosen solution

Not all locales come with a dictionary installed due to licensing reasons.

If you do not have the en-US locale then you need to check that you have a dictionary installed (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) and selected.

Maybe the article could make that clearer.
