Why is all the type condensed in Firefox?

I am using Apple Macs. I am constructing a website in 'Freeway'. All the 'html' type is set in 'Verdana' (one of their recommended faces), strait forward, uncondensed. It appears almost identical in my 'Safari' browser and yet it all comes up as a condensed face in 'Firefox', making all look a lot smaller (probably too small)! Incidentally the same applies to my 'i-photo' gallery type. Infact the whole of the 'Firefox' 'Ask a question' page is in condensed faces except the word 'mozilla' which is presumably a picture. Is this unique to my computer or is this across the board? And, is there anything I can do about it? No good making my type face bigger as apparently a 'Windows' browser will do this anyway!
