I have an EEE PC 7.0.1 running Linux and when I try to install Firefox 9.0.1. I get a Download Error as follows: \tmp\firefox 9.0.1. tar-2.bz2 could not be opened because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preference. I am new to computers and I do not know where or how to do what they say. What is an "association" , where do I find "preferences", ??? can you give me a step-by-step instruction please?

Do it the easy way: hold: ctrl+alt+t to open a 'terminal'. Then type: sudo firefox &

Firefox will open in 'admin' mode. Go to help: Check for updates. Click the update button.

HOWEVER, firefox will stop working if you upgrade past Firefox 3.x.x with the original eee linux (Xandros). More info on this: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-newbie-8/problem-installing-firefox-5-libstdc-so-6-version-glibcxx_3-4-9-not-found-890286/

Some people have changed linux distros on their eee (Easy-Peeesy, EEEBuntu). If you choose this, install and run it from a USB thumb drive before overwriting the original distro (no longer available). Even with the eee specific distros, sometimes the network driver doesn't work right.

I installed Easy Peasy 1.6 - http://www.geteasypeasy.com/ - on my Eee 900, which is far superior to the old version of Xandros Linux that came with the EeePC. Many of the people behind Easy Peasy worked on earlier versions of Eeebuntu, there shouldn't any issues with hardware drivers.

Thank you very much for the reply (mjmmjm) - I am still using Firefox 3 which is probably why I am having all this trouble because as you explained, it is not possible to update it on my eeepc 7.01. and it sounded as if you had had the same problem. However I downloaded Easy-Peeesy together with an installer but I can't find it and do not know where to look for it. There do not seem to be any .exe files anywhere and although I have searched for "easy" the search returns "0 files found" which makes me wonder whether it got downloaded in the first place. Furthermore, were I to download it successfully, I do not know how to remove/overwrite the existing Xandros operating system and I doubt whether I have room for two operating systems on this little eeepc at one and the same time. I have not got a memory stick, but I shall try and get hold of one and download it on to that, but so far have not been into town to go to a computer shop, I shall keep you posted but I am still very vague as to the inner working of my little machine, although I was exceedingly grateful to you for the ctrl+alt+t information - it was a revelation! Many thanks also to ed.meister who has more or less recommended the same solution, and the fact that the same people who worked on the EeePC produced Easy-peeesy makes if even more interesting. I just upgraded firefox to 3.6.25, and .26 is still available. IMO, an EEE is like an appliance - a good one. If it isn't broken, don't fix it. Balance that with fixing something until it breaks, and you'll find a happy, working, medium.

Thank you mjmmjm - I have downloaded Firefox 3.6.26.tar.bz2 and was told that dowloading it would overwrite the original version and place an icon on the desktop, so I am presuming it has installed by itself. Am I right because alongside it is another file called "firefox3_210.tar.bz2" which I would have thought would have been overwritten? They are both in the same directory : My EEE PC\My home. Alongside is another file called "install.firefox.sh" but clicking on it brings up a text file only. Accessing the Web icon on the EEE PC Home Page always brings up Google bypassing the Mozilla Firefox home page so I cannot access "tools" and "about" to check the version, and no Firefox icon has appeared on the desktop.

My main reason for wanting to upgrade is that my Gmail has removed a number of facilities like manipulating files and directories and wants me to update to Google Chrome but cannot do this in Firefox 3. I have downloaded Google Chrome - and have found it in the new Firefox directory but I cannot get it installed but will post that as a separate query once I know whether I have installed Firefox 3.6.2 or only downloaded it. Thank you again - Cheers, Cissle
