I have nothing really to add to what I've put in the question, except that I got a message about a problem with Firefox. I tried to submit a problem report, but when I clicked on the necessary button, I just got the new icon.

Hi rmbooker,

I've seen this happen periodically, but it's pretty easy to fix. Just delete the icon from your dock. Then recreate it by dragging the Firefox icon into the doc from the applications folder.

Hopefully this helps!

Thanks, that works!

A simple solution that I should have thought of myself.
