OK I get a MSG from Firefox telling me I need to update to 10.0.2 or something due to a security issue and strongly recommends that I update. at the bottom two buttons, ask later or install update I hit install on three separate occasions and all I get is another message that says downloading Firefox then a bar across all then connecting to update server this page never changes nor does it ever actually connect.

Earlier I advised someone with an apparently similar problem to try a clean re-install on the presumption that the fault was on the users install of Firefox.

I am not sure Firefox explicitly list the servers they use for downloads, but general info suggests they are not having any major problems (see http://status.mozilla.com/ )

Have you got any security software likely to block install or changes to your system.

If there are problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version and delete the Firefox program folder to remove any leftover files.

Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible.

  • Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall the current version or you lose your bookmarks and other data because all profile folders will be removed.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.
