At some websites like Huffington Post FFx always becomes slow to respond, sometimes freezes up, and acts balky. When using IE or Chrome there is no problem. I upgraded to FFx 15 with no improvement. I have several extensions installed:

Adblock Plus Autofill Forms DoNotTrack Plus Flag Fox IE Tab 2 Java Personas Microsoft .Net Framework Vacuum Places Zscaler Safe Shopping

Could you try disabling Firefox's hardware graphics acceleration? You usually need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).

orange Firefox button or classic Tools menu > Options > Advanced

On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"

If you restart Firefox, is the issue resolved (or improved)?

Yes, unchecking the "use hardware acceleration when available" box helped a lot. It seems to be working OK now. Thank you.
