Anytime I open a window in Intenet Explorer a window opens in Firefox for HP (http://www.hp.com/go/quickprintBootStrap.exe) Why is this happening?

Any time a new window opens in Internet Explorer a window opens in Firefox with the following URL: http://www.hp.com/go/quickprintBootStrap.exe. I have looked at add-ons and settings in both browsers and can not find what it might be.

Hi - Grandma here - I owned 3 computer stores and have 30 plus years in system design, so I did a little research on the BOOTSTRAP.EXE program (just a little mind you) and it appears to be a program with a valid HP digital signature which makes sense based on the URL you showed. HOWEVER when you go to the HP site that link you listed is dead and another shows up, apparently a newer version of HP's BOOTSTRAP.EXE using a different name. So the good news is it probably isn't spyware and the bad news is its probably kind of old, outdated and useless at this time.

So lets get rid of it unless you are positive you want to keep it.

First, are you using an HP printer? Is it kind of old? Do you remember when you installed drivers for it? If its been awhile or you don't have the printer anymore than it makes sense to get rid of this - absolutely.

Next, have you checked your Firefox HOME PAGE settings under Preferences or Options? Many people set their home page to google.com or mozilla.org or their email provider or favorite music or video provider. Setting it to HP doesn't seem very useful and there's a pretty good chance the reason it keeps popping up like that is something related to the home page settings in Firefox. Check those out and try to set it to some other web site. Then do a test...reboot your PC and go look at the home page setting again. If it goes back to this BOOTSTRAP.EXE thingy, then some program on your PC is doing that and we'll need to disable it or get rid of it.

Next, if you decide that you don't need quickprintBootStrap.exe then we can go hunt it down and remove it. There are a few ways to do that, but unfortunately Microsoft and HP may throw a few roadblocks at you along the way, so this can get pretty nasty or it may be a piece of cake. Lets find out.

Try using the Windows SEARCH utility to find quickprintBootStrap.exe or BootStrap.exe or quickprint. See if anything shows up with those names and make a note of WHAT FOLDER its in.

If you get nothing, then look for a HP related folder, which may be HP or Hewlett Packard and sometimes its shown as the name of a printer, like HP101Printer or some other name. If you don't have that printer any more you can try to uninstall the software using Control Panel and REMOVE PROGRAMS or you might be able to just RIGHT-CLICK-DELETE the folder.

This is where it can get a bit nasty. If you try to RIGHT-CLICK-DELETE a folder and it says Access Denied it usually means there is a program in that folder that is still running and Windows won't let you delete the folder.

There are several utilities out there that can do this for you - that is delete a folder that Windows will not allow you to get rid of. Unfortunately, mnany of those utilities have SPYWARE in them and its a little dangerous to try out software that you don't know. Actually its more than a little dangerous. Common problems like this - pop ups and BootStrap issues - are a magnet for hackers so unless you are sure the program you are downloading is safe (who can be sure?) then you may want to try the following method first.

The TECH way to get rid of a folder that won't go away with a normal Windows boot is to BOOT IN SAFE MODE and then hunt down the folder and use the RMDIR /S command in MS DOS. This means going to a TERMINAL PROMPT, also called a MSDOS COMMAND or CMD PROMPT and removing the folder just like a Tech would do it.

To boot Windows in SAFE MODE, you shut down, then boot up and press F8 and a bunch of boot options will appear. You want to select the one that gives you a COMMAND PROMPT.

Once you get a command prompt, you will need to use the following command:

RMDIR /S "C:\Program Files\HPsomewhere\some other folder\and maybe another\"

I made up the names and you will need to fill these in based on your SEARCH for HP above.

If you are not sure what those names should be you can also try this at your command prompt.

DIR HP* /s

This will search your entire hard drive for anything that starts with HP. That search can take a while so be patient.

You can also try:

DIR quickprint* /s which will search for any files or folders that starts with quickprint.

Based on the results of your search, you will then use the RMDIR /S command to remove those folders related to HP.

One big warning. if you have an HP printer or other device and start randomly removing HP folders you stand a pretty good chance of removing the drivers for that device. That means you may have to either reinstall the drivers from a CD/DVD or go fetch them from the HP website. If that's true and you have some HP devices, its a good idea to make sure you have the installation CD/DVD or can find the drivers at the HP web site before any HP related deleting folders.

One other note...if you still see the URL popping up after removing the folders then its possible you got infected and some virus is using this as a method for fooling you into thinking you are downloading an HP related BOOTSTRAP.EXE, but really you are downloading malicious code. If that's the case you need to figure out what program is running on your PC that is triggering the pop up and get rid of that. You should be running a virus scanner to find malicious code like this and a firewall to prevent malicious code from running freely. One of the best firewalls is Jetico, though its a pain to answer 101 questions the first time you run it, and there are many free virus scanners out there along with reviews about which ones work best with your operating system.

Finally, if you still can't get rid of this thing, you might try uninstalling Firefox and re-installing it. DON'T FORGET to back up your Bookmarks before doing that and save the backup of your bookmarks to some other folder before uninstalling Firefox.
