Chosen solution

Update to original problem:

While operating in Safe Mode I disabled all of my extensions. Starting normally, even with the extensions disabled, would result in the crashing described above.

After restarting the computer I attempted to start FF normally. To my surprise FF started in normal mode, and all of my extensions were still disabled. This allowed me to re-enable each extension one by one to try to identify which extension might be causing the crashes. I was able to re-enable all extensions without issues.

I have been using FF normally with all extensions enabled for two days without the crashing. Although it pains me that I wasn't able to identify the cause I'm satisfied that the problem is resolved.

Thanks to everyone for your help.

Hi marqaha,
Sorry you are having problems.

It may help if you could provide a couple more Crash IDs. I am unable at present to get a report for the one mentioned above.

The fact Firefox is ok in safe mode often means the problem is due to

  • Software Extensions
  • hardware acceleration or graphics problems (more likely to give black screens or stop rather than crash)
  • or rather rarely changes to appearance with themes etc

Try disabling all extensions without using safe-mode,if that helps add them back one at a time. If it crashes with extensions disabled try disabling hardware acceleration.

See

If you have any security software make sure it does recognise the new version of Firefox. (That problem is more likely to stop Firefox rather than crash it )

If you have security related UTILITIES for safebrowsing or information storage etc ensure they are uptodate &/or temporarily disable them. (Such things often crash new versions of Firefox, and any value is speculative)

Thanks for your response.

I have disabled hardware acceleration, and confirm that I'm running the latest video and audio drivers. I am using the default theme.

I have tried to disable all extensions and restarting FF normally but it still crashes even with all extensions at first updated and then finally disabled. It continues to run in safe mode.

I have run scans with MalwareBytes, Spybot S&D, and AVG Free and all confirm no infections or suspicious files. I have disabled AVG Free and currently run no other security software to interfere but the problem remains.

Hi thespian77,
Sorry you are having problems.

I do not know much about Macs, and you are probably best starting your own thread, by asking a new question using /questions/new.

Your crash reports show this signature: Firefox 18.0.2 Crash Report [@ js::mjit::FrameState::storeLocal(unsigned int, bool) ]

If you can start and run in Firefox safe Mode then something that is disabled in Safe Mode is causing the crashes. When you run in Firefox Safe Mode:

  • All extensions are disabled.
  • The default theme is used, without a persona.
  • The Just-in-time (JIT) JavaScript compiler is disabled.
  • The userChrome.css and userContent.css files are ignored.
  • The default toolbar layout is used.
  • Hardware acceleration is disabled.

You can start with this:

Given the crash signature, see also:

EDIT LOOKS LIKE ALICE HAS FOUND THE KEY, with the post above.

I do note some of the crash reports show no extensions, but maybe that is a fault with the crash reporting process as you say it runs in safe mode. (The first one you posted is available now and an example with only the default theme shown.)

Your crash signature is rather rare, you may be the only person generating that signature on Firefox 18 at present. Some signatures show thousands or even hundreds of thousands of crashes per week. It is likely to be a problem on your own machine, and you have taken the initial steps in ruling out malware.

We do know it runs in safe mode, so rather than considering malware further, or what the exact cause may be lets just go ahead and try and get it working again retaining as muchdata as possible,

Whilst doing this you may as well do a clean install involving deletion of the program files.

You will need to carefully read all of this (Unless a simple reset works)

  1. I do not like using this particular step. (There are often moreconservative methods of solving problems) but if it may well work and if so saves you a lot of trouble. (Note you may loose some preferences ). Ensure you have any extensions home sites etc bookmarked, all extensions will be removed and all open tabs & tab groups.
    1. Use Reset option from safe mode or troubleshooting.
    2. try Firefox is it fixed now ? if so you just need to get the extensions back. No need to continue with the remaining steps.
  2. If problems persist
Using safe mode or an alternative browser download a suitable fresh copy of Firefox from
  3. Backup the profile and copy it some where safe (such as the desktop) outside firefox program or profile paths.
  4. Remove the firefox program folder either manually or using the control panel and reinstall the new copy.
  5. Now copy back some of the old profile files to the new profile in order to restore bookmarks and passwords etc.

Good luck, please post back with how you get on.

I guess that's why restarting the computer is #1 in the list of Basic Troubleshooting steps:

Glad it's fixed :-)
