Hello,
In Firefox 23, as part of an effort to simplify the Firefox options set and protect users from unintentially damaging their Firefox, the option to disable JavaScript was removed from the Firefox Options window.
However, the option to disable JavaScript was not removed from Firefox entirely. You can still access it from about:config or by installing an add-on.
about:config
- In the address bar, type "about:config" (with no quotes), and press Enter.
- Click "I'll be careful, I promise"
- In the search bar, search for "javascript.enabled" (with no quotes).
- Right click the result named "javascript.enabled" and click "Toggle". JavaScript is now disabled.
To Re-enable JavaScript, repeat these steps.
Add-ons
You can alternatively install an add-on that lets you disable JavaScript, such as
- No-Script (to disable JavaScript on a per page basis, as required)
- QuickJava (to easily disable and enable JavaScript, automatic loading of images, and other content)
Thank you and I hope this helps!

This whole new mozilla policy "we must protect users from themselves" is counter productive.
Despite my Javascript for Firefox 23 being "enabled" ( I checked re the "about:config" steps above), some websites are still asking me to enable my Javascript to view content. Why is this? Is there still a security problem with just leaving Javascript enabled? Any advice re this matter would be very much appreciated, please?
I like the "JS Switch" add-on which adds an option to the Tools menu or a button to the tool bar to enable/disable javascript.

Thank you Bilboo for your very helpful suggestion.
This new update sucks I've just spent an hour getting my Firefox back how i like it , Firefox is supposed to be customizable that's why we use it so stop taking options and features away from us please . We need java script to use most webpages so why disable it and then take away the option to enable it again how stupid is that ? Just like the search box and address bar change you guys made why did you do that ? I hate that too.
Modified
Dear Firefox,
Please do not become stupid like Microsoft. Removing things like the switch for disabling JavaScript is being stupid like Microsoft. "An effort to simplify the Firefox options set and protect users" is not a good effort. Please stop. Or you'll force me back to Chrome.
Thank you.
Dear Firefox
I'm in rage ... better put in 24h registration ques so you can save myself from typing here.
If you want to save people from them selves than dont point them to way complicated Addons like NoScript or QuickJava! or about:config (where you totally can screw up!!!) If you want kindergarden ... than kick all options out. make certified micros.. eh mozilla firefox seminars where you can buy a 50k$ degree for turning options on and off in ff. That way you know that your stuff works right? It's bullshit and you know it!
I always disable javascript in firefox and turn it on when I need it like youtube. Also I run multiple separate Profiles! all the "oh so dependant javascript social sites" have their own profile with javascript turned on. addons have their profiles, grouped even. I don't need firebug in every web use. login sites like bank or mail have their totally own profile. Main profile has 20+ tabgroups (A really GOOD function! I applaud you for this one!) and way to many tabs.
(sigh)
And when do you remove this option totally? people will fuck around in about:config now. and they don't care about the "dear honey the plate is hot don't touch it" warning. is there an estimate milestone to remove things? what do you plan to remove in the future? will you delete/modify profiles? will I be forced to start them with the profilemanger UI? will I be able to load them like now with arguments? Or delete -no-remote to many ff instances can screw up ...
Now i have to search for alternatives again ..
thank you .. sincerely thank you for your effort to safe myself from your browser
EDIT PS: solution to the about page. PIN the tab, so this tab comes available to all tabgroups. copy paste into a new tab: about:config?filter=/^javascript.enable/ only one entry should come up modify the search all you want here are examples http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config#Search_bar
