My search engines are gone from FF, and I cannot add any In "Manage Search Engines. I have tried deleting the various files suggested, I have uninstalled FF using the Linux Mint Software manager and re-installed using both apt get and the software magaer. I have deleted my profile, used the reset FF button.

There does not seem to be any unusual toolbars or add ons running. the Mint Search Enhancer is the only add-on still listed. I have tried disabling it, and starting FF in it's safe Mode, with no change in the Search engines or the Search Engine manager.

You can check if you have the XML files of the default search engines including Google in the browser\searchplugins folder in the Firefox program folder.

  • (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

If not then you need to reinstall Firefox.

You can also try to delete the search.json file and possible search-metadata.json and search.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder to reset the search engines to the default.

Firefox will rebuild the search.json file from the default search engines in the "browser\searchplugins" folder in the Firefox program folder and the searchplugins folder in the Firefox profile folder.

I am running Linux Mint 16 XFCE, not windows.

I had previously tried deleting all those files in my profile, resetting FF, deleting the entire profile, re-installing, etc., as I mentioned above.

None of these steps has made any difference. Still no search engines available.

FF seems very flaky on Linux. I've had more problems in a week than in 10 years on XP...

Sorry about the confusion of the Operating System.

I'm on Linux as well and do not have a problem with the current Firefox release and later development versions (28, ,29 , 30).

Are you using a Firefox build from the official Mozilla servers or a branded version from the repositories of your Linux distribution?

Did you check the browser/searchplugins folder in the Firefox installation folder to see if the default search engines are still present?

I am getting the Linux Mint version of FF through the Software Manager. I did try to install the version directly down loaded from Mozilla, but didn't succeed due to my poor Linux skills.

There is nothing in browser/searchplugins folder, which I guess indicates where the problem is. I'm not sure what to do about that? Re-setting or re-installing again did not write anything in that folder.

Thanks for the help! At least I have a clue what is wrong now.

I've got some search engines back by going to their web pages (got the first address through Chrome), and then using the tool on the web page to install the search engine. That worked.

The Mint Software Manager installs FF 27.0.1.

I don't know why they disappeared, or why something didn't come back with a re-set or re-install.

Thanks!
