Hey sean, Thank you for your question. I understand that you would like to know if you can open office docs in a new tab instead of open with.

I think there is a bug in open office https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=12686 for tabs. Though there may be more recent?

Try about:permissions and see if openoffice.org has any stored preferences for this action.

Hi Sean,

From what I can understand, you want to open office files from your computer in Firefox with a double-click instead of a right click -> open (which is working for you right now but I don't know how). If that's incorrect, I'm off base. If it's correct, that sounds like you want to change the default application of office files to Firefox.

If you are using Windows, you want to go to Control Panel -> Default Programs and follow the directions there. I assume there's a similar process if you're using a different OS.

What is Open Office and how is it different from Microsoft Office?

Hi sean,

I will clear this up for ya. There are a number of services online that store your documents in cloud services. (As you may already know) Open office is a open software to open .doc files or files with microsoft extensions. Open office has its own extensions as well like ots.

Libre office is also free. The plug in mentioned will open the doc in the browser with the assistance of a plugin.

If you were using office 365, that was what I originally though you were talking about.

Did you try the default programs of the plug in suggested? ;-)

Open Office has been around for 15 years, almost as long as Mozilla.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenOffice.org

Sun Microsystems bought Star Office in 1999 for in-house use and then turned it into an open source project in 2000, to complete with Microsoft Office. Oracle shut down Open Office in 2011 after the buy-out of Sun. Shortly before the shut-down of Open Office by Oracle, the open source part of the project became split into separate factions - Adobe picked up the "official" name version, while many of the open source developers kept "things" going under the Libre Office name.
There is also a "fork" called NeoOffice specifically for Mac OSX, available at the Mac App store (not free-though) .

As far as the "cloud" part for online storage goes, I have no interest in the "cloud" for storing documents, and I don't know how much any of the three forks is involved in cloud storage - but all three forks are so much more than being mere storage medium like a "cloud". They are a full feature suite that is very equal to what Microsoft offers with Office, Word, Excel, and Power Point.

OO and LO can open and edit most Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents. And they are primary supporters of Open Document Format for Office Applications.
The best thing is two of them are free open source projects, like with Mozilla.
