Display my Replies in Thread mode

I'm new to Thunderbird, so my apology if this is an easy question. I've set my options up to view messages in Threads and I'm in vertical view. When I click on a thread in the e-mail list pane, the message pane only displays what other people have contributed to the thread and none of my own replies. If I expand the thread in the e-mail list pane, it clearly indicates that I have replied to the thread. It seems that seeing my own replies would be important (defaulted) in the display of the thread in the message pane.

How do I get my replies to a thread to show up as part of the conversation in the message pane?

The Inbox or any folder will only show threads that you have received.

To read all the conversation including responses you made which are saved in the 'Sent' folder.

  • Right click on a threaded message in the list
  • select: 'Open message in conversation'

A new tab opens showing 'all' , both sent and received.

you can view as it is or if you want all the emails reorganised in date order, Remove the threads and click on 'Date' header column, click again to reverse the order.

This may be of interest to you. There is an option to save 'Replies' in the same folder as the message being replied to, which for threading purposes may improve your experience.

Tools > Account Settings > Copies & Folders for the mail account. OR 3bar menu icon > Options > Account Settings > Copies & Folders for the mail account. OR right click on mail account name and choose 'Settings'# then 'Copies & Folders' for the mail account. Under the section 'When sending messages, automatically'

  • Select: 'Place replies in the folder of the message being replied to'
  • click on 'OK'

Thanks Toad,

This does help, but here are some of my problems with this work-around.

In order to view the messages of a thread in the Message Pane, the thread has to be Collapsed. When the thread is Collapsed, the right-click "View As A Conversation" option is not available on the pop-up menu. So now I have to Expand the thread to get the "Conversation" option.

Next, upon opening the Conversation window, the Message Pane only shows the detail of a single e-mail since the thread is Expanded. So now you have to Collapse the thread you just Expanded in order to see the conversation in the Message Pane with my replies. (What we were looking for all along)

Finally, opening up a window to the conversation to see my replies seems like unnecessary overhead as any window opened needs an additional step of closing the window.

In and of itself, your answer does get me finally to the view that I'm looking for. You can make the point that you only have 6 extra clicks ("Expanded","Right-Click","Conversation","Collapse","Close","Collapse"), I would argue that that's a lot of overhead if you are reviewing many conversations during the day.

Thanks.

I've read through this query and responses, but "the solution" that I'd prefer isn't mentioned and I'm convinced there's a way to accomplish it, but I can't figure out how to do it.

The "Conversation View" shows repeats of many messages if they are in inbox, marked important, etc., which I really do not want.

In most threaded views I'm familiar with the tree shows each message once, and only once, regardless of whether it's "marked" in multiple ways and my own replies (or, more generally, the replies of the person who's doing the actual replying) show up in the tree as well as the messages that are "incoming only."

Surely there is a way to make messages display in this way. What the combination of settings required to get this is what I can't figure out.

If anyone knows what that combination is, please share.

britechguy:

Yes the conservation view will pick up all instances of the thread which it collects from all folders. Your particular issue seems to arise because you have the same email stored in different folders and you have selected to gather all emails from all folders that are in same thread. If you have multiple copies saved in various folders there is no way to know which email is required or not as they are all in the same thread.

The standard threaded view in any folder will link all threads in that folder. As previously mentioned, you can choose the option to save your replies in the same folder, so linking Sent and Received in same folder.

One option would to create a folder for a particular thread, organising all emails that are part of that thread in that folder and also selecting to keep replies in that same folder.

In either case, you do not have to use the Conversation view method, so it will not pick up all the other 'copies' you have applied as labels so that they appear in other folders.
