I'm changing web hosting services but will be keeping the domains and associated email addresses. I don't want to lose the emails I have saved in folders. Will they still be available once I change the web host or do I need to save them somewhere else? If I need to save, what will I need to do?

it's IMAP

With IMAP all mail is managed on the server. Therefore to preserve all your mail you'll need to backup all messages to your 'Local Folders' account.

First replicate the folder structure on the server in your 'Local Folders'. You'll need to create those folders manually.

Then select all messages in a folder on the server (press Ctrl-a). Right-click the selected messages - Copy To - Choose the corresponding destination folder

I'd start with a single message to test the procedure. If you have a large no. of messages, do this in chunks, don't copy thousands of messages at once. After each copy action, check that the messages have indeed been copied over.

Repeat the procedure for every folder on the server.

Once your new (IMAP) account is working you can upload the messages onto the new server.

What is your account type - POP or IMAP?

I think it's POP, but I'm going to have to find my notes from a year ago. Unfortunately, it's not set up on the laptop I'm using this morning.

For the accounts, you should be able to check that in Account Settings, Server Settings.

Apologies for the delay -- I got a chance to check, and it's IMAP. Will that make things more complicated?

You could make archives and move those into Local Folders.

Thank you -- seems to be working.

Follow-up question, especially as I'm now on the verge of shifting the emails over. Do I need to copy all the folders into the "Local" folders on all affected machines, or just one? I'm thinking just one, and then once the email addresses are moved, copy them back and they should then show up on the other machines once Thunderbird re-syncs? I don't want to make any wrong assumptions....

You're exactly right. You only need to copy all the folders into "Local Folders" on one machine.
