I see the problem on various sites, but Ebay has gotten bad. If I go to my Ebay account summary and try to list past purchases, I get the side info bars, but no middle content. I reset Windows Explorer, but that didn't seem to fix it. I can see that some graphics elements are blocked, since a small box with 4 letters or numbers appears. But I've checked everything I can think of regarding memory, graphics or such? What have I missed? Thank uou!!!

Missing icons are usually supplied by a font that is downloaded from the server (@font-face) as you might see by little boxes that show the hex code of the characters instead. If you have a font installed that covers this Unicode range then you may see a real (CJK) character and not the little box with the CSS code.

Make sure that you allow pages to choose their own fonts.

  • Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced: [X] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"

You can check the gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled pref on the about:config page and make sure that it is set to true (if necessary double-click the line to toggle its value).

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the cache and remove cookies only from websites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

I found the problem. I was doing a lot of drive cleaning and 3 or 4 of the files were fragments that was causing the drive to misbehave. A complete defrag and Chkdsk later, the fragments were dealt with, and the issue cleared up. That being said, THANK YOU for the complete and thorough response! That, above all else impressed me. I was very happy that you explained exactly why the icons for some things had disappeared. That gave me a lot of clues as to what to look for.

Well done, and many thanks!
