How to stop unwanted programmes starting spontaneously/

as I'm viewing or working on a site, others keep on opening up and getting in the way. How can I stop this?

What others? Are you talking about other programs, or other windows? What is on these other windows / programs?

You may have ad / mal-ware. Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.
