Firefox 57 Interface Customisations (tabs, toolbars, tags, themes)
I agree with the many users who have vented their frustration regarding the Firefox Quantum changes. I understand why we need a new platform but cannot fathom why developers insist on 'forcing' certain functionality/features on users without allowing them to customise it according to the way they work.
I have bitten the bullet and downloaded Firefox 57 as I was starting to experience some really weird behaviour with an older version but I have a bunch of issues that I'm hoping can be fixed now – or will be fixed in the near future. Can anyone offer advice re fixes and/or whether the functionality is being considered and its likely timing?
Really, really need: 1. how do I change icons on the bookmarks toolbar (currently a number of the icons show the earth/globe and not a picture relevant to the website. I have tried re-dragging the website to the bookmarks toolbar but it does not change the icon). The ‘bookmark favicon changer’ add-on no longer works. I have found a possible solution by configuring the userChrome.css but this is too onerous ( https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/7m27o8/any_way_to_change_favicons_in_firefox_57/) 2. how do I colour tabs (currently all the same colour and very difficult to see). The ‘ColourfulTabs’ add-on no longer works. 3. Will functionality from the TabMixPlus add-on be included? 4. What is happening re bookmark tags (management and use)? The TagSieve and TagsSideBar add-ons no longer work. 5. how do I make the colours of the buttons on the toolbar automatically change so that they are legible for a given theme (currently some themes have the same colour as the buttons making them unreadable)
Really, really want: 1. how do I move the close/open/minimise buttons to the title bar (currently in the toolbar) 2. how do I move the tabs to the left (currently 2cm of space is wasted for the close/open/minimise buttons and blank space) 3. how do I make the background of the toolbar and bookmarks toolbar transparent so that I can view themes properly (currently opaque) 4. how do I rotate through my themes automatically (the ‘personas rotator’ add-on no longer works) 5. Themes and ‘ColourfulTabs’ conflict i.e. – can only have one or the other. Will this be fixed?
Nice to Have: 1. how do I adjust the size of the icons on the bookmark toolbar 2. how do I adjust the size of the buttons on the toolbar 3. how can I add the refresh arrow to the right side of the URL bar (currently a button in the toolbar) 4. how do I change the font size on tabs 5. how do I change the font size in the URL bar
Thanks Serky

Hi Pkshadow
thanks for the feedback. I thought about using ESR but it doesn't really fix the problem long term. I will put my feedback on the discourse site. The most disappointing aspect is that it's not appreciated how tiring it can be trying to find new solutions for functionality that once worked.
Cheers Serky

It probably would be best if you went back down : 52.5.3 ESR. It will continue to get security updates until May 2018, and you can download and install it from this page: *https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/ Note : Legacy Extensions will be deleted or removed in any version update after May 2018.
You should make a backup of your Profile before going back and just because:
- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles
- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/export-firefox-bookmarks-to-backup-or-transfer
To submit suggestions for new or changed features, may I suggest: Feedback: https://qsurvey.mozilla.com/s3/FirefoxInput/ or https://discourse.mozilla.org/c/add-ons
Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

This is quite a list!
Really, really need:
- how do I change icons on the bookmarks toolbar (currently a number of the icons show the earth/globe and not a picture relevant to the website...)
- Firefox should use the site icon from your last visit, unless it has aged out of cache/history.
- how do I colour tabs (currently all the same colour and very difficult to see). The ‘ColourfulTabs’ add-on no longer works.
- You may need to use custom style rules in a userChrome.css file for this. However, that is difficult to change on the fly and has low programmability, so its practicality will depend on the complexity of how you want them colored.
- Will functionality from the TabMixPlus add-on be included?
- Some. Opening bookmarks in a new tab has been added. There's an extension to control which links open in a new tab. But TMP has a zillion features so it depends on which you care about.
- What is happening re bookmark tags (management and use)? The TagSieve and TagsSideBar add-ons no longer work.
- I don't know about this.
- how do I make the colours of the buttons on the toolbar automatically change so that they are legible for a given theme (currently some themes have the same colour as the buttons making them unreadable)
- These are either "bright" or "dark" and the colors of the built-in buttons are flipped accordingly. You probably could use custom style rules to apply a different fill color to the buttons then white or black.
Really, really want:
- how do I move the close/open/minimise buttons to the title bar (currently in the toolbar)
- I can't imagine why they would be in the main toolbar unless you are in Firefox's full screen (F11 to toggle) with the cursor in the address bar.
- how do I move the tabs to the left (currently 2cm of space is wasted for the close/open/minimise buttons and blank space)
- You can use custom style rules for this -- this one removes the empty spacers at both left and right:
.titlebar-placeholder[type="pre-tabs"],
.titlebar-placeholder[type="post-tabs"] {
display: none;
}
- You can use custom style rules for this -- this one removes the empty spacers at both left and right:
- how do I make the background of the toolbar and bookmarks toolbar transparent so that I can view themes properly (currently opaque)
- You can use custom style rules for this, but then the toolbar buttons can lose visibility. Example code: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1190823#answer-1040525
- how do I rotate through my themes automatically (the ‘personas rotator’ add-on no longer works)
- I don't know about this.
- Themes and ‘ColourfulTabs’ conflict i.e. – can only have one or the other. Will this be fixed?
- I don't know about this.
Nice to Have:
- how do I adjust the size of the icons on the bookmark toolbar
- In what way? Firefox has a preference to globally scale the UI including icons and text, other wise custom style rules.
- how do I adjust the size of the buttons on the toolbar
- Same
- how can I add the refresh arrow to the right side of the URL bar (currently a button in the toolbar)
- I don't think it's possible to move outside buttons into the address bar.
- how do I change the font size on tabs
- Global scaling factor, custom style rules, possibly an extension once more theming capabilities are available.
- how do I change the font size in the URL bar
- Same
I had the same problem with theme rotation and finally found one plugin that does a decent job. Startup Theme Changer You have to have all the themes you want installed on your system first, but then it will at least rotate them when the browser starts.
