Restore menubar customizability to Firefox?

I keep trying the latest versions of Firefox and then go back to 56.0.2 because that is the most recent version in which the UI customization capabilites are not broken. The latest version, 59, is still broken.

I use the menubar all the time so I want it permanently visible. With 56.0.2 I can move everything else I need onto the menubar, which lets me have a nice, compact UI that consists of only the menubar and the tabbar (attached screen capture). After 56.0.2 I can't do something as basic as moving the urlbar onto the menubar, which means I have to waste screen space with another toolbar that has no purpose except to show that immovable urlbar.

Nor do the post-56 versions of FireFox let me tackle the problem from the other direction: I am not allowed to move things from the menubar onto the urlbar's toolbar so that I no longer need the menubar.

If there is an extension for later versions of FireFox that restores UI customization abilities, please let me know.

I'll see if I can figure out the userChrome.css option as soon as I can find a way to download FF 59 that lets me install it where I want and prevent it from wrecking my current FF profile. It justs wastes so much time right now because I have to 1.) back up my profile 2.) install 59 3.) reinstall 56 4.) restore my profile from the backup because 59 f*cked up my profile.

The current "Firefox Installer.exe" from "https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/?scene=2" is broken: it gives the users no options to about where to install it and no options to protect the users' profiles.

Well you do have a option is to install the Developers Edition which is in continual beta but has a compatibility mode for installing with other Firefox Versions. It does share your bookmarks so do make a back up of them. You do not have to use the tools and they do not get in your way. So you can test and try things out on it.

Spent a few hours last night trying to figure out how to use userChrome.css to move the urlbar and the back/forward buttons onto the menubar. No joy: using css for this is nothing at all like using basic css for styling html which is the limit of my abilities.

So I'll be sticking with 56.0.2 for a while longer. I check out 60 when it is released to see if any of the customization capabilities have been restored.

You can forget about that. In Firefox 56 you could use Classic Theme Restorer to have these items customizable. CTR isn't compatible with Firefox 57+ and it is not likely that this will change in the future. You can't use userChrome.css to move items across toolbars.
