With all the news about websites setting up invisible boxes to harvest logins & passwords, I only want to be signed in to my master when I want to sync my tabs or enter a password for a specific site; and then I want to be signed out again, without having to quit FF.

Is this possible? And if not, it SHOULD BE!

I can't answer that question, but I can suggest disabling autofill. In that case, you need to click in the login field and select your username from a drop-down before Firefox will enter your login. Depending on how frequently you need to log in, this may or may not be a huge pain. Give it a try??

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste signon and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the signon.autofillForms preference to switch the value from true to false

Note: The separate signon.autofillForms.http should be false by default.

Note by moderator.

Received a PM from the OP that my reply further down is helpful.

You can sign out of the software security device by clicking Cancel in a master password prompt (e.g. Show Passwords in the Password Manager) or via the device manager (Software Security Device -> Logout).
  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security: Forms & Passwords: "Saved Logins" -> "Show Passwords"

EDIT: I think actually this may have the opposite purpose. If Firefox wants to Sync and you dismissed the master password dialog, it isn't supposed to bother you again for 15 minutes. So in that case, changing this preference won't help you at all.

After I posted, I noticed this other preference that may be of interest:

signon.masterPasswordReprompt.timeout_ms

The default value is 900000, or 900 seconds, which is 15 minutes.

Does that seem true in your experience, that if you haven't used the password manager for 15 minutes you need to re-enter your master password?

I wonder whether that time is extended if you have Sync set up, that is, Firefox is constantly using a saved password so the timeout doesn't occur. Hmm.. I should do a search rather than post speculative questions but lunchtime nears. ;-)

This was very helpful. Still want to be able to SIGNOUT immediately after entering a password for the one site where I need to use it. I rarely sign into sites because I save cookies for my usual forums and don't often do much else with saved passwords in FF (the important ones are never saved).

fyi : you make no mention of a 2nd device. Sync is not a backup and is not to be used as such. You will end up loosing your data.

Using both I suggest you make a backup :

I do have a 2nd, 3rd and 4th device and sync things perhaps weekly or every few weeks. I have proper backups for my laptop so no worry about losing my bookmarks.

I need to sync rarely, and to enter a password from firefox password manager only occasionally. I'd like to to be able to SIGN OUT from FF Master Password once I've done those things, without having to quit FIrefox every time.
