I have Thunderbird setup to get my IMAP Gmail address. I've got Gmail setup to check another address (called it address 2 for here) and put it in my inbox. Thunderbird now retrieves both the Gmail address and now address 2. They both go into my Thunderbird inbox. Problem is, when I get an email from address 2, when I hit reply, it defaults to my Gmail address and not my address 2 where the original email was sent to. Is there a way to reply from the address it was sent to? Thanks much!

Wouldn't using identities be useful here? I haven't tried yet but just read up a little on it.

What I change there on the Gmail server will effect how Thunderbird sends messages from what account?

It is set up on the Gmail settings to reply from the same address it was sent to, but that doesn't effect how Thunderbird replies it seems

You'd need to set up the account for address 2 in Thunderbird and then use the Google SMTP Server for it.

For that I wouldn't need to set up Gmail to get address 2 then. I'd rather Gmail get that address so that it's the same on all devices. Does that make sense?

It makes sense, but then you do have the problem with the Gmail address being the from: address. I don't see any way around that other than creating the account for address 2 in Thunderbird. You could still pull messages for account 2 via Gmail.

What is the advantage of using the gmail smtp server instead of the server associated with address 2? Why pull the messages for address 2 via gmail if I need to create a second account in Thunderbird anyway. Seems I'd get duplicates then right?

Typically this is used when a user uses the email address provided by his or her ISP. The user must then be connected to the Internet via this particular ISP in order to be able to use the ISP's SMTP server. When away and connected e.g. via a WLAN somewhere, the Gmail SMTP can be used instead.

In order to avoid duplicating the checks for new messages, first go to your account settings by opening the Edit > Account Settings menu, then select Server settings and un-check both, Check for new messages at startup and Check for new messages every XX minutes. This assumes your account is a POP one. I don't know. You came up with the idea.

Thanks for your replies! It seems there would be an add in to make this work easier. I'm not using an ISP address, it's through Godaddy POP3.

I'm not sure what you'd like to achieve with creating a new identity. Can you elaborate?

With the new identity, I can reply from the sender to address 2 with the address it was sent to.

So you could by simply setting up the account for address 2.
