Due to a Thunderbird crash I have had to set up my account again. All is well now except that I've forgotten how to add the alias email address that I use as volunteer webmaster for a nonprofit.

All I need is for the "From" address to show my name with that other address (website@xxx.org, a Google group) instead of my personal email, and to add a different sig at the bottom of those emails. Can someone remind me how to set this up?

This has been working fine in Thunderbird for the last five years. My outgoing messages showed my webmaster address with my personal address grayed out to the right; recipients saw just the webmaster address. Replies to the webmaster address are auto-forwarded to my personal address so I don't have to keep Gmail running to handle website communications.

Have you tried actually adding the alias with your ISPs SMTP server? (Clicking the manage identities button in the entry above Server settings for the account in account settings). What you are talking about sounds like simply adding an alias in the account settings and using your ISP SMTP as the from shows the "name" of the SMTP server as displayed in the list in Outgoing servers (SMTP)

usually you add an outgoing server (SMTP) in the accounts dialog. Then add an identity in the main accounts section of the same dialog to use the new SMTP server.

The alias I had before didn't use the SMTP server of the From address, since it's a Google Group address to which none of us has server-level access. It used my ISP's SMTP server (hence the grayed-out appearance of my personal email following the alias address on the From line while I was writing outgoing emails). I think that's the definition of an email alias.

What I'm asking for, I think, is help with is adding the alias address to my personal account as an option so that I can choose to show it instead of my personal address on the From line. I set it up once, 5+ years ago, but now that it's gone I can't figure out how to get it working again.

Thank you, Matt! That did the job and I'm now able to select this alias with its own sig when I compose a message or reply.

Note to other users: In my version of Thunderbird (Windows 10), the "Manage identities" button was at the bottom of the Account Settings screen rather than Server Settings and wasn't visible until I scrolled down.
