Recently reset my PC and reinstalled Firefox v77.0.1, then restored saved profile with Moz Backup. Now find that auto login doesn't work on certain sites (but not all eg. Facebook) when closing and reopening the browser, yet works perfectly when rebooting PC and Firefox starts automatically. User name and password are populated, just not signed in to most websites and lose settings in others. As an experiment uninstalled Firefox and deleted profile folder, but a fresh install is exactly the same so is this a Windows or Firefox issue?

email response would be better. International calls very expensive!

A detail like a website remembering you (log you in automatically) is stored in a cookie.

You can use these steps to make a website recognize and remember you:

  • create a cookie allow exception with the proper protocol (https:// or http://) to make a website remember you
  • use "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed" to let cookies without allow exception expire when Firefox is closed
  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
Cookies and Site Data: "Manage Permissions"

In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" or otherwise clear history.

  • do not clear the Cookies
  • do not clear the Site Preferences
  • clearing "Site Preferences" clears exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, and software installation and exception for password and other website specific data
  • clearing "Cookies" will remove all selected cookies including cookies with an allow exception you may want to keep

Nope...doesn't work. Manually added permissions for various websites, but still don't auto login!

If clearing cookies didn't help then it is possible that the cookies.sqlite file in the Firefox profile folder that stores the cookies got corrupted.

  • rename/remove cookies.sqlite (cookies.sqlite.old) and when present delete cookies.sqlite-shm and cookies.sqlite-wal in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed in case cookies.sqlite got corrupted.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

The profile deoesn't contain any cookies.sqlite folders. Just noticed when checking about:profiles, the only profile is called default, but in the profile folder it's default-realese. Is that relevant?

Sorry...looking in the wrong place. Folder has cookies.sqlite-shm and cookies.sqlite-wal but no cookies.sqlite

more options

cookies.sqlite-shm and cookies.sqlite-wal are SQLite temp files that are normally only present when Firefox is closed.
Windows might be hiding some file extension and I don't know if .sqlite is among them, so also look for a cookies file as that file should be there, especially if you have the temp files.

From what Firefox version was the backup you restored ?

cookies.sqlite-shm and cookies.sqlite-wal folders are present only when Firefox is opened, nothing when closed. Back up was from v77.0.0 How can I recreate the cookies.sqlite folder?
