I want to use Firefox on my Win 8 desktop. i want to move my favorites, settings and add-ons to a new Win8 laptop from my old Win 7 machine. I know how to do it with Win 7 machines by moving my profile. I can't find appdata on the Win 8 PC to move the profile to.

I will also want to do the same with Thunderbird.

The easiest way is to use Sync. You can find it in Tools / Options. You'll always have settins, bookmarks, saved passwords, history synced between you computers (and Android devices).

By default, the AppData folder is hidden. On Windows 7, you can make hidden files and folder visible using Windows Explorer. Does this apply to Windows 8?

In Windows Explorer:

Organize > Folder and search options > View tab or
Tools menu > Folder options > View tab

At that point, you should see radio buttons to hide or not hide (see screenshot).

While I think it's best not to hide things from yourself, it can cause lists to become more cluttered. There is a shortcut you can use to open the AppData\Roaming folder:

%APPDATA%

That should work in Windows Explorer or the Start menu search box.

Does any of that apply to Windows 8?

Thanks guys. I didn't realize I had not unchecked the hidden files and folders and so forth.

I am a little overwhelmed at this point trying to assimilate the Win 8 changes.
