Cut & Paste for bookmarks doesn't Cut, Just copies
I use bookmarks a lot, but i don't like them crowding up my bookmark bar so i cut & paste them to a folder on my desktop, but when i right click a bookmark and Cut it, then paste it into my folder it pastes it there but its still in my bookmarks, in the old version of Firefox when I Cut a bookmark and pasted it on my desktop it removed the bookmark from my browser, why doesn't Firefox do that anymore? or is there a setting that i can configure to make it do that again because its annoying to cut & paste a bookmark then go back into my browser and delete it when it shouldn't even be there in the first place. CUT MEANS TO MOVE THE OBJECT ENTIRELY COPY REPLICATES THE OBJECT KEEPING ONE IN THE ORIGINAL POSITION AND THE SECOND IN A DIFFERENT POSITION.

Hi, ITS working fine for me.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
To Enable SafeMode
- You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
- Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.
- Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"
If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.
Close and restart Firefox after each change via "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: "Firefox > Quit Firefox"; Linux: "Firefox/File > Quit")
I have tried starting in safe mode before, as well as resetting my firefox entirely but to no avail, when i cut the bookmarks and paste them to my desktop it pastes the bookmark on my desktop but also leaves the main bookmark still in my browser, i just want to be able to cut the bookmarks and paste them without having to go back to my browser to delete the bookmark i just cut and pasted...thanks for the suggestion though
Firefox doesn't let me cut and paste between the Bookmarks Toolbar and the desktop -- I can only "Paste Shortcut."
By the way, you can create a folder on your Bookmarks Toolbar for bookmarks you don't need often, and drag those bookmarks into the folder.
it used to in an old version of firefox, thats why i wanted to know if it was a bug with the current version or not, i know i can put the bookmarks into folders but i have A LOT of bookmarks so it doesn't really help, pasting shortcuts for bookmarks used to cut the bookmarks from the browser to paste it on the desktop but now it just copies it ...
I searched in the bug tracking system but didn't see anything related to cutting/pasting bookmarks from Firefox to the desktop. I have been known to miss things in there, however.
It might not be a bug, they may have just decided to take that out, if they did it makes me angry they should just remove the cut feature in the browser if they are gonna just make it copy things .... :/
If it was an intentional change, it should have been tracked in the bug tracking system. That's what I was searching for and didn't find.
weird... well thanks for all your time, i guess i just have to deal with it
If it continues to get on your nerves, you could file a new bug. Sometimes that gets prompt action, but because there are crash fixes and other urgent changes in the pipeline, it might take a while.
i was chasing this issue because, being new to the wonderful firefox, i was trying to equate the shortcut/link system in the less wonderful IE. i would ideally like to place particular shortcuts/links/bookmarks straight in the subject file they pertain to. secondly because i also keep my own stuff on a separate hd, they are still there when my os crashes and i have to reload it. neither browser enables this but IE is a simpler true cut and paste (delete implied) two operation, whereas firefox is a more demanding copy, open file, paste shortcut (bookmark no more!), return to bookmarks and be sure to delete the correct bookmark. that is tedious for a few bookmarks.
otherwise i really, really love firefox.

Hi Buspass, I don't have any new ideas on the bookmarks, but you may want to back up your Firefox settings folder to ease rebuilds. This article has tips on that: Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.
thanks for a prompt response. with respect, i would still prefer to do things directly if possible. being inherently untidy, i'm afraid my backing up duties tend to be posthumously too late. besides, how many backups of what should we make?

ok, i give in. what does the last post mean? please.
That is meant as a link to some bug reports about "cut" issues and enhancements mainly addressed to jscher2000.

apologies, didn't realise it was a link. i'm obviously way out of my depth here but hope i have been able to make a sensible user point. i'll step back and see what happens. thank you all.
There are safety precautions to avoid that you delete bookmarks by accident via "Cut".
In some older versions a cut removed the bookmark(s) immediately, but that doesn't happen anymore.
Firefox most likely can't detect if you paste a bookmark on the desktop and thus thinks that you do not want to cut and dragging only copies the bookmark.
ok, i can feel the bottom as a simple user now. the ideal bookmark/link/shortcut system to me would be as storing any chunk of info from the web. firstly a default store file or any other chosen. then it would follow the existing rules of cut/copy/paste and delete. seemples. we already know that cut cuts and have probably still deleted by mistake. that is my fault, not the system, but you don't do it again.
