Win XP Pro. Other than updates, same software has been in place for several years and functioned as expected.

When printing to PDF, some parts of page print as black blocks. Problem occurs with all combinations of Firefox (22 and 23), Opera (12.16) and Chrome (25.01364.152M) with test printing using PDFCreator, CutePDF Writer, Foxit PDF printer and PDF995. HOWEVER, can print PDF OK from IE8 (8.06001.18702) and other applications.

Do you notice any association of the black boxes with features such as animations, plugins, or downloadable fonts?

As a possible workaround, you could try the Print pages to PDF extension. The latest release is still under review, and only available from the versions page: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/ad.../versions/. It uses a custom version of Webkit to render the page for conversion, so I don't know whether it will work around the issue you're seeing in Chrome, but because it captures the on-screen appearance by default, maybe it will.
