freestockcharts.com does not load in regular mode, but runs OK in private mode. Why?

I run vista ultimate with the latest updates - both windows and firefox. freestockcharts.com hangs after connecting in regular mode, but works fine in private mode. Why? I do have the latest version of silverlight installed and enabled always in firefox.

It loaded correctly on my Firefox browser.


Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode" Safe Mode Fx 15 - Win

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

Please check if all your plugins are up-to-date. To do this, go to the Mozilla Plugin Check site.

Once you're there, the site will check if all your plugins have the latest versions. If you see plugins in the list that have a yellow Update button or a red Update now button, please update these immediately.

To do so, please click each red or yellow button. Then you should see a site that allows you to download the latest version. Double-click the downloaded file to start the installation and follow the steps mentioned in the installation procedure.

The private mode doesnt use cache, or addons as of what I know.

Clear the cache....

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache. Note: This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to. To clear cache and cookies do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > History > Clear recent history or (if no Firefox button is shown) go to Tools > Clear recent history.
  2. Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
  3. Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
  4. From the details list, check Cache and Cookies and uncheck everything else.
  5. Now click the Clear now button.

Thanks for all the suggestions above.

I tried all the suggestions above. Disabling addons behaved exactly like before except that the ads on the side appeared. The stock portion goes through the usual silverlight loading and connects to the website. In the next step it shows loading and stays there for good.

While it was frozen in regular mode, I tried the same in Private mode and everything worked as expeced. The regular mode still hangs.

In Private Browsing mode Firefox isn't using the disk cache and the cookies from a normal session.

If clearing cookies doesn't work then it is possible that the cookies.sqlite file that stores the cookies is corrupted.

Rename (or delete) cookies.sqlite (cookies.sqlite.old) and delete other present cookie files like cookies.sqlite-journal in the Firefox profile folder in case the file cookies.sqlite got corrupted.


You can remove all data stored in Firefox from a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History > Show All History" or "View > Sidebar > History") or via the about:permissions page.

Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox from that domain like bookmarks, cookies, passwords, cache, history, and exceptions, so be cautious and if you have a password or other data from that domain that you do not want to lose then make a note of those passwords and bookmarks.

You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of the involved files.

It doesn't have any lasting effect, so if you revisit such a 'forgotten' website then data from that website will be saved once again.

Thanks for the suggestion, cor-el. Unfortunately, it still does not work!

This is what I did:

I went to show history all (ctrl-shift-H). There was only one entry of freechartstocks.com. I right clicked and forget this site. That even stopped showing my email which was visible when I started ctrl+shift+H. Anyway a refresh brought back the mail.

Then from explorer, I did a search of 'cookies' in c:\users\<my name> and deleted all files and folders that had 'cookies' in the name anywhere. Then I shut down the computer, restarted, checked for cookies again in the folder mentioned above (none found), and tried freestockcharts.com with the same result.

Did you find the cookies.sqlite file?

Note that the Firefox profile folder is in a hidden location.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

hi Cor-el: Yes I did find the directory and the file. [My settings are to view hidden folders.] Just to be sure I re-deleted the cookies etc. using the help route and the results are identical. Thanks for your suggestions.
