It seems that the plugin check site has been updated to detect Java 8, and thus because the site is not designed to recognize multiple versions as current versions, it no longer considers Java 7 to be up-to-date.

Because Oracle still recommends Java 7 U51 for Windows users, I suggest ignoring the plugin site and sticking with Java 7. However, if this is really bothering you, you could try Java 8.

More background in this thread: Firefox 28.0 is indicating that my installed Java SE 7 U51 is vulnerable (2014 03 20).

I have this problem. I have windows 7. This thread says Java wants me to keep the older version. The thread in the link above indicates that the Mozilla suggested solution is to download version 8.

To me these two threads indicate completely contradictory solutions. Why should I trust either thread to be correct. How would I even have a clue.

I have to say my inclination here is to assume Java knows what it is doing and Mozilla has dropped the ball and therefore I should not trust what the Firefox add-on checker is telling me.

And this is one reason I have FireFox set never to check for updates. Until whatever version I have stops working properly in some critical aspect, I do not update. And here I am once again having my distrust for FireFox updates reinforced.

Hi TwoTankAmin, the plugin check site always recommends the latest, but Oracle seems to be taking a cautious approach in rolling out Java 8, forcing you to get it from oracle.com instead of java.com.

Please note that the plugin check site has nothing to do with automatic browser and extension updates. Whether you choose to use an older insecure version of Firefox (not recommended) or have it update automatically, the plugin check site is merely advisory; Firefox cannot automatically update third party plugins.

Just get it Java JRE 8 from Oracle, and you will not see the out of date warning anymore and first uninstall your current version of java.

Previously reported that Flash extended service release is also marked as vulnerable while it's not (and that hasn't been fixed yet either), now Java does the same... The plugin check page is becoming pretty darn useless as this rate!

In other words: until the page is actually fixed, you shouldn't put too much faith in the results.

Hi wolfbeast71, I know you mean to be helpful posting this here on the support forum, but if you want to give feedback, a better way is:

TO solve this problem go to Oracle and download Java JRE 8 but first uninstall JRE 7

jscher: Help -> Submit feedback has been totally useless in the past. it's not even clear if anyone ever reads that, let alone addresses an issue indicated.
