I had to reinstall W7 in June 2014. When I did, I didn't download T'bird again--waiting for issues not related to T'bird to get fixed. I just used the web email since I was mostly getting news letter, etc.. Now I need it to write personal email. OK, I downloaded T'Bird today and , well it configures automatically actually, BUT I cannot stop it from downloading mail between June and present. . (that have already read on web mail). HOW can I get it to stop downloading 245 old emails? I do know I can get a completely new email as was shown at first email. but I didn't know anything about that and needed to get going writing personal emails?? Help! I am Windows7 O/S

Do you stil have the old Thunderbird profile? This can be found in C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\ If you do you could delete the new profile and point T'bird to the old profile.

Other option is to disable the internet connection before you start Thunderbird and then change the profile in your t'bird account settings.

When I re-installed it was "clean" one.. T'bird not possible have anything left over.. No old profile to have ?? See, AT&T web-mail--mail configured to go to T'bird when I open T'bird apparently.. No exceptions ??? Is that even a T'Bird problem that needs to be re-configured ?? It could easily be something within AT&T ..Maybe the reason it starts downloading so far back is, it is downloading from date of re-install?? Cannot be that...BUT ?? I don't have 245 unread emails available to even be transferred to T'Bird according to what I see one the web. .. JUST thought. I haven't emptied trash or spam boxes. AT&T has schedule to delete them regularly ?? .. I never have to do that because when it comes to T'Bird and I delete it , it is gone.. The emails I can see online right now, they are either unopened or saved... AT&T supposed to be pop server, I was told long ago, so after they download to me they are supposed to be deleting them ?? They SAY? BUT I am still dealing with AT&T, so that has to be considered too--aren't always doing what they tell you they are doing.. I could disconnect from internet easily before opening T'bird , but when it starts automatically receiving, I think it will download the 245..? OK, I could go to profile , but I wouldn't have a clue what to delete in the profile folder. Never fooled with that. Besides, isn't that a folder Windows O/S won't allow me to open anyway ? Think I tried to manage a problem long ago in profile folder for some reason. ... I am not computer Geek. Also, 245 isn't even close to the number of emails received since the re-install. I think I get thousands a month--at least it seems like it. Have to pick and choose the ones I do read..Just not enough time in the day, unless I wanted to spend all computer time on emails. Hey, I am Photoshop oriented--through and through. How about this... Uninstall T'bird.. then through Windows explorer delete every T'bird folder that is left?? ?? But I use Firefox only and it is running great, plus I wouldn't really know to recognize anything that might be FireFox related. I don't want to mess up FireFox because it is right where I want it now, and not causing me any trouble. I will go and delete the spam and trash online, plus clean up the saved folders online that I can see.. Also thru W/E delete any remaining T'bird folders I can find--program or otherwise.. then re-install T'Bird ..but if it happens again...? I will still need HELP !!

I really don't want to make a mistake in doing the windows explorer deletions--SO, I do need help on the specific folders to delete in T'Bird.

.. Thank you for answering this question so quickly. I really have never used any Mozilla community support with FF or TB. The forums I have asked questions before--never heard back from them..ESPECIALLY Adobe CC. The answer IS online somewhere, but finding it among the massive online info?? Well, I say-"Good Luck"..

Oh, I will emphasize that I am a very long time user with Mozilla and had T'Bird for ages--Cannot remember when I haven't used that program for email.. I have lots of experience using T'Bird with AT&T .. I can say, that if anything went wrong in the past, it was usually AT&T fault. But, don't suggest to call them, please. They are Microsoft thru and thru and they , most of the time, will say that they cannot advise anything when using 3rd party software.. ie, if you aren't using Outlook or Outlook Express , it is considered 3rd party!! I say, how come T'Bird 3rd party anyway?? Obvious reasons...

Thanks Dorine,

Margaret Anne

Hi Margaret Anne,

It is because it was a clean install for T'bird these emails are all new. When you start using your old profile T'bird wil only get the new emails.

Your old profile should still be there and you can view the folder if you make invisible folders visible.

Would you like me to help you? Send me a private message if you do.

Yes, I do need some help--but I don't know how to do a private conversation.?? Write me back and tell me how to do that. I have only emptied the spam and trash folders, hoping that someone would reply and help me with the Profile--I still don't see how it could be an old profile, but then I don't know how to read code or anything related..

In my profile you see a private message link and a link to my website. Your problem is not caused by an old profile but by the new profile.
